Portfolio of Projects

The UCLA Neurosurgical Clinical Quality Program UCLA Neurosurgical Clinical Quality Program:
Active Projects

Clinical Care Initiatives: Quality and Safety

1. Creating Clinical Pathways

  • Will ensure consistent quality of care and efficiency for spine, brain tumor, pituitary tumor, deep brain stimulation, and endovascular surgeries.

2. Neurosurgery Dashboard

  • Tracking metrics for overall care, quality, safety, patient satisfaction, and efficiency/throughput.

3. Command Center

  • Evaluating algorithms for early detection of patient deterioration and therefore prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest.

4. ICU Quality and Safety Projects

  • Include projects on medication errors, infection control and safe transitions of care.

5. Infection Control

  • Focus on reduction of catheter-associated urinary tract infections, catheter-associated blood stream infections, and C. difficile, while  increasing hand hygiene.

6. Epilepsy Program

7. Pediatric Neurosurgery

8. Re-designing the M&M process

Patient Centered Care and Satisfaction

9. High Performance Teams

  • Implementing a standard communication tool between faculty, residents, case manager, discharge planner, charge nurse, bedside nurse and patient.  The HPT (Hospitalization goal, Plan for today, Transition and discharge) reduced care coordination rounds from 40 - 60 minutes to 20 - 40 minutes with consistent and efficient communication of vital information.

10. Creating a UCLA Neurosurgery Brochure to enhance patients' understanding of our System and empower patients to participate in their care

Efficiency and Throughput

11. Discharge by Noon

  • Addressing inefficiencies in the system and communication barriers with patients and providers that lead to a late discharge, creating a safety concern for patients' transition of care.

12. Health Care Sustainability and Waste Reduction

  • Reducing  waste by implementing the following programs: green IT, green office, green labs, water waste reduction, recycling of plastic and cardboard containers on the unit, discarding linens, re-stocking unused supplies, re-packaging intubation trays, and evaluation of lab utilization.

13. OR Efficiency

  • Improving OR throughput and decreasing supply costs.

14. Santa Monica Spine

  • Improving patient satisfaction and throughput.

Education and Mentorship

15. QI Education for faculty, residents, and medical students

Future Projects

16. Reducing Patient falls

17. Implementing the ABCs of Hospitalized Patients to ensure improved glycemic control, reduction of foley and central catheter use, increased DVT prophylaxis and reduced falls and decubitus ulcers

18. Integrate quality and safety discussions in the Board's agenda

19. Annual Quality Award for faculty, residents, and staff

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Rated One of the Top Hospitals in the Nation for 23rd Consecutive Year
